The sense of concern that many share today is real and vast.
The pandemic has changed the world. It’s had an enormous impact on all of our lives. We realize all too well that we don’t need to detail the many impacts of this historic time. But recently, we took some time to reflect. The catalyst for reflection was our own personal loss. Losing someone so dear to you is difficult and during this unusual time, seemingly more so, if that’s even possible. Even if you haven’t lost a loved one, the sense of loss of life as we have known it is a significant challenge for all.
It is in Admiral William H. McRaven’s wisdom that we are reminded that while the big things like pandemics can and do impact our world, so too can the small things…
Admiral Willam H. McRaven is a retired U.S. Navy SEAL. On May 17, 2014, the Admiral gave a commencement speech at the University of Texas. He shared ten lessons he learned from basic SEAL training. While he shares ten lessons, it is in lesson one that we began to reimagine our day, then our life as a way forward to better times. This small thing, when done daily, can also foster encouragement to continue to move forward.
Make Your Bed…a simple task, mundane at best. But, there is wisdom in this simple task.
As Admiral McRaven puts it, “If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another. By the end of the day, the one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed.”
Admiral McRaven also shares that making your bed will reinforce the fact that little things in life matter. So just as the pandemic, a really big thing in our world, has changed us, so too can the little things.
If you take the time to read Admiral McRavens 2014 commencement speech or better still, his book, you’ll find ten lessons.
These lessons are about his experience with overcoming the trials of SEAL training. But, as he shares, these lessons are equally important in dealing with life’s challenges, no matter who you are. In this challenging time, we hope you’ll embrace and consider some of these lessons, these small changes you can make to deal with some of life’s biggest challenges. These are little things that can change your life…and maybe the world.
